Kona Cotton Solids – Kona Fabric by the Yard, Precuts & Color Cards

What Is Kona Cotton?

Kona Cotton is Robert Kaufman's line of solid quilting fabric: a 100% cotton, medium-weight plain weave, about 44" wide, dyed in one of the biggest color ranges in quilting. The full palette runs to hundreds of shades (the Kona color card shows 365), and new colors are added from time to time. We keep hundreds of them in stock as yardage, with 108" wide backing, 8- and 10-yard bolts, and precut palettes alongside.

Why Quilters Reach for Kona

Read our Kona reviews and the same words come up again and again: consistent color, a good weight, and a tight weave that isn't see-through. That makes Kona a go-to for the jobs solids do best:

  • Backgrounds – White, Snow and Bone sit behind busy prints and let the piecing pop.
  • Borders and binding – Kona Black is one of our best-selling solids for crisp borders, binding and Amish-style quilts.
  • Modern and color-block quilts – with this many shades, you can build a gradient or rainbow from one line.
  • Appliqué – a firm, smooth base that holds a clean edge.
  • Quilt backs – choose 108" wide Kona to back a quilt in one piece, or browse all wide quilt backing.

Kona Color Cards and the Color of the Year

Colors look different on every screen, so many quilters keep a Kona color card on hand. It holds a real fabric swatch of every shade, with names and numbers, so you can match a print or plan a palette before you order. Each year Robert Kaufman also picks a Kona Color of the Year (for 2026 it's Wander), sold as yardage and as precuts.

Kona Precuts and Bolts

Kona Roll Ups (2.5" strips), Ten Squares (10" squares), charm packs and fat quarter bundles come in single colors (perfect for background pieces) and in curated palettes. See every solid bundle in solid precut fabric. If you use a lot of one color, an 8- or 10-yard bolt is the easiest way to keep your favorite white or black on the shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Kona Cotton colors are there?+

The Kona range runs to hundreds of shades – the Kona color card shows 365 – and Robert Kaufman adds new colors over time. We carry hundreds of them. If a color you need is out of stock, check back, because popular Kona colors are restocked regularly.

What's the difference between Kona White, Snow and Bone?+

White is a bright, clean white. Snow is a softer off-white that many quilters use when pure white feels too stark. Bone is warmer and creamier. They look similar on a screen, so if your whites need to match exactly, compare them on a color card or buy all your background fabric at the same time.

Should I prewash Kona Cotton?+

Many reviewers say Kona shrinks very little and keeps its color, and plenty of quilters skip prewashing. The exception is deep, saturated shades like bright pinks, reds and navy, which can release extra dye in the first wash. If you're pairing those with white, prewash the yardage or add a color catcher to the finished quilt's first wash.

How is Kona fabric by the yard sold?+

Our yardage is priced by the quarter yard. Add 4 to your cart for one yard, 8 for two yards, and so on, and it's cut in one continuous piece. Kona also comes in 108" wide backing, 8- and 10-yard bolts, and precuts.

Can I use Kona Cotton for quilt backing?+

Yes. Standard Kona is about 44" wide, so you'll need to piece it for most quilt backs. Kona 108" wide backing covers most quilts up to king size in one piece, with no seams.
