Flannel Fabric by the Yard – Baby, Plaid & Woolies Flannel

When it comes to flannel quilt fabrics, there are probably many things that spring to mind, but cozy, warm, soft, and comfortable are likely at the top of your list! Flannel quilt fabric is typically made from cotton, wool, or a blend of fibers for extra softness and warmth. Flannel fabric has a brushed surface that creates the fuzzy texture it’s known for, making it ideal for quilts intended for colder climates or for those seeking extra warmth.

Flannel Fabric FAQs

Should I pre-wash flannel fabric?+

Most of our customers do. Flannel shrinks more than quilting cotton, and reviewers who pre-washed in cold water report it shrinking about 1 to 1½ inches in length, so buy a little extra. Many also tell us the heavier Woolies flannels held their color and softness through the wash.

Is flannel good for quilt backing?+

Yes – it's one of the most popular uses. A flannel back makes a quilt warmer and softer, and our reviewers often mention long-arm quilters and family members asking to touch it.

What flannel is best for rag quilts?+

Choose a flannel with body that fluffs up in the dryer. Customers use Woolies and solid flannels for both the middle layer and the back of rag quilts, because the brushed fibers fray into a soft fringe after washing.

Can I use flannel for baby blankets?+

Absolutely. Baby flannel prints are a favorite for receiving blankets, burp cloths, bibs and baby quilt backings. Pre-wash first so the finished blanket stays the size you made it.

Does flannel pill or fray?+

Quality flannel with a dense weave sews easily and resists pilling – several reviewers say Woolies flannel barely frays while piecing. Lighter, lower-weight flannels can pill sooner, so check the weight in the product details if durability matters.
