What is a precut?
Fabric cut to a standard size before it’s sold (strips, squares or fat quarters), usually one of every print in a collection. See the precut guide below for every size.
How much fabric is in a jelly roll?
About 2¾ yards: a typical jelly roll has 40 strips, each 2½″ × the width of the fabric. Pack counts vary, so check the product page.
How much fabric is in a layer cake?
About 2¾ yards: a layer cake usually has 42 squares, each 10″ × 10″. Check the product page for the exact count.
How much fabric is in a charm pack?
About ¾ yard: a charm pack usually has 42 squares, each 5″ × 5″. Counts can vary by collection, so check the product page.
What’s the difference between a fat quarter and a quarter yard?
Both contain a quarter yard of fabric, cut into different shapes. A fat quarter is approximately 18″ × 21″–22″; a quarter-yard cut is 9″ by the width of the fabric.
How many precuts do I need for a quilt?
Start with your pattern’s fabric requirements. Quilt size, block design and borders all affect how many packs you need. Allow separate fabric for backing and binding.
Can I mix precuts from different collections?
Yes. Match the color temperature and add a solid or blender as a calm base. Check that the precuts are the same size before you sew.
Should I prewash precuts?
No. The pinked edges fray and the pieces shrink out of size. Wash the finished quilt with a color catcher instead.
What can I make with a jelly roll?
Jelly rolls work with patterns written for 2½″ strips, including quilts, table runners and other patchwork projects. Check your chosen pattern for the number of strips and any extra yardage required.

What is a precut?
A precut is fabric that comes already cut to a standard size: strips, squares or fat quarters, usually one of every print in a collection. Because the sizes are standard, thousands of quilt patterns are written for them, so you can open the pack and start sewing.

How many precuts do I need?
Start with your pattern. As a rough guide, one jelly roll makes a lap-size top, one layer cake makes a throw, and two or three charm packs make a baby quilt. Add yardage for borders, backing and binding.
