What Is Cuddle Fabric?
Cuddle fabric is a brand name for the premium minky fabric made by Shannon Fabrics. It's a 100% polyester knit with a luxuriously soft, plush surface that feels like velvet or faux fur. You'll sometimes hear it called cuddle cloth, minky, or Shannon Cuddle — they all refer to this same family of ultra-soft fabrics. Compared to regular fleece, cuddle fabric is softer, denser, and has a much more luxurious drape.
It comes in a wide range of styles: smooth Cuddle 3 (the classic), textured Dimple Dot, premium Luxe Cuddle with embossed patterns, colorful Printed Cuddle, and Extra Wide Cuddle (up to 90" or 108") that's perfect for minky quilt backing. There's also Quilting Cuddle, a lighter-weight version designed specifically for piecing.
Quick Tips for Sewing with Minky Fabric
Working with cuddle fabric is a little different from quilting cotton, but these tips will have you sewing like a pro:
- Use a walking foot — It feeds both layers evenly and prevents the plush surface from shifting.
- Pin generously or use clips — Minky is slippery! Wonder clips work great and don't leave holes.
- Increase your stitch length — Set it to 3.0–3.5mm for smooth stitching through the plush fibers.
- Cut with a rotary cutter, pile side down — Keep a lint roller nearby for the fluff!
- Don't iron directly — Use a low-heat steamer or finger-press your seams. Direct heat can melt the polyester fibers.
- Spray baste for quilt backings — 505 Spray works better than pin basting on slippery minky.
- Reduce presser foot pressure — If your machine allows it, lighten the pressure to prevent the fabric from compressing.
