BasicGrey Fabric for Moda is one of the many fabric designers we love. Although the BasicGrey fabric studio produces print collections each year, BasicGrey is particularly well known for its Grunge fabrics. Missouri Star offers fabulous BasicGrey Grunge fabric for quilting.

BasicGrey was founded by Rachel Brenchley, its principal designer. BasicGrey designs fabrics for Moda. Notice that the name BasicGrey is smooshed together into one word. In addition, grey is the British spelling of the color word. These factors can sometimes cause confusion when sewists in the USA are looking for BasicGrey Grunge fabric as Basic Gray Grunge fabric.

Why are so many sewists searching for grunge? It’s not because they are fans of Pearl Jam! It’s because BasicGrey fabric for Moda has made grunge glorious and crossed it over to the quilting scene. So, what is grunge fabric?

Moda BasicGrey Grunge fabric is unique because the fabric is dyed first, then it is printed on one side. The fabric achieves a “shabby” or scuffed effect because of the colors applied over the solid. This BasicGrey fabric becomes deeply saturated with dye. Depending on the number of colors applied and the subtlety or contrast of those colors, this “solid” fabric–called Grunge Basics–isn’t solid at all. Two quilt pieces cut side-by-side from the same BasicGrey Grunge fabric might look quite a lot different from each other. This causes visual illusions of texture and depth in a quilt that are not possible to achieve with other fabrics.

In addition to a wide selection of Grunge Basics colors, Missouri Star offers other Grunge fabric by the yard. Moda Grunge Hits the Spot–commonly known as Grunge polka dot fabric–is a patterned Grunge with lighter dots printed over dark solids or darker dots printed over light solids. BasicGrey Grunge Seeing Stars–commonly known as Moda Grunge Stars–are asterisk-shaped stars printed over solids. Sometimes people look for this fabric by the name Basic Grey Grunge Seeing Stars.
