Gauze is a loosely-woven, cotton fabric. The loose weave of gauze makes the cloth lightweight and breathable–great for warm weather wear. Double gauze fabric is exactly what the name suggests: two layers of gauze that are basted together. Doubling the gauze makes it less transparent and more absorbent while retaining its light and airy properties.
Some people wonder, what is Embrace double gauze? Embrace double gauze is manufactured by Shannon Fabrics. It is basted together every inch which gives a subtle grid pattern throughout the fabric and allows the two layers to act as one. While all double gauze fabric tends to get softer with repeated washing, Shannon Fabrics double gauze is known to be a particularly soft fabric. That is why it is favored for use in infant swaddles, burp cloths, receiving blankets, and baby garments.
Embrace double gauze also works well for loose-fitting garments such as scarves, shirts, blouses, skirts, pants, and swimsuit cover-ups. Double gauze will shrink when it is washed the first time, so it is wise to pre-wash before sewing with it. Washing will give double gauze a wonderful crinkle texture that adds to the style of warm-weather garments. It is also easy to achieve a frayed effect on the hems of double gauze garments and scarves.
Shannon Embrace double gauze may be used for quilts, too! If you choose double gauze for one side of the quilt, it would be wise to choose it for the other side as well. That way the fabrics will “behave” in a uniform fashion. Lightweight silk or wool batting or flannel are recommended for use as batting in quilts made from double gauze.
